Students Present Projects from Dual Credit IUPUI Class

Providence Cristo Rey is one of three Indiana high schools taking part in a pilot program - iDEW - to increase the interest in, and access to careers in technology. Instructed by professors with the School of Informatics and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University, the iDEW (Informatics Diversity-Enhanced Workforce) program is offered to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors at Providence Cristo Rey as a dual-credit class. In addition to classes, the program provides high school students in at-risk populations access to skills workshops, internships, professional certification training, campus and tech company events, said Mathew Palakal, executive associate dean at the School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI.
Each semester, students work in teams to present final projects illustrating skills they learned in the dual-credit class. This semester projects included apps ranging from "Mastering Useless Knowledge" to Trivia about "Athleticism."
"Students work on socially relevant, real-world problems by learning and using informatics and computing technology, and through these learning experiences they are introduced to in-demand, lucrative career opportunities," said Palakal. Last year there were more than 10,000 computer and IT related job openings in Central Indiana. The iDEW program complements Providence Cristo Rey's mission of preparing students for career readiness.

Seniors Celebrate Mass with newly ordained Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin

In what has become an Indiana tradition, our seniors traveled to Ss. Peter & Paul Cathedral today for a special mass with celebrant His Eminence, Joseph Cardinal Tobin, C.SS. R. After nearly four years as leader of the Indianapolis archdiocese, Tobin was named cardinal by Pope Francis. In what was one of his final local homilies before his move, Cardinal Tobin told the seniors that in many ways, he knows what it is like to look toward graduation and moving onto the next chapter of their lives. He will take up residence in New Jersey in January to lead the Newark archdiocese. "The word of God will illuminate your path," said Tobin. He encouraged students to continue to seek ways to serve others just as Jesus did. Tobin, who was born in Detroit was ordained in 1978. Following the mass, he shook hands with students and congratulated them on their accomplishments.
